Our Soils

All soils of

Müller-Catoir

Created and shaped by nature over millions of years of earth's history, each of our vineyards has received its own character. Over the course of 250 million years, a mosaic of fundamentally different rock formations developed in a very small space. They literally form the basis of our vineyards. As diverse as the rocks are in their mineral composition and properties, the soils that emerge from them are just as diverse. The stone content, the mineral composition, the supply of mineral nutrients, the water and air balance as well as the rootability and heatability of the soil are largely determined by the source rock. Vines root through the subsoil to depths of a few meters. The humus-rich topsoil of a vineyard is already characterized by mineral grains and fragments of its rock base. Below this is the mineral soil, which is the product of complete rock weathering. The vines then encounter a horizon of decomposed, friable rock and finally, if necessary, the source rock. A look into the geological past makes it clear why our closely spaced vineyards are characterized by different rocks and soils.
